Phil Collins in concert, Lajeado Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil on 28th February 2018. Review and photographs by Marcelo Jagostini.

So, last night I saw Phil in concert for the first time ever. The legendary Phil was on tour in my country although he had been here before with Genesis back in 1977.

Before Phil came on stage, The Pretenders played a set of their own songs and were in great form despite the rain which did delay Phil’s appearance on stage. Phil eventually came on stage and uttered some Portuguese words: “Boa noite Porto Allegre… Obrigado” (Good evening Porto Allegre and thank you ) and then he started the show with Against All Odds. Despite his obvious physical problems Phil’s voice has lost none of its power and the set drew on many of his most popular songs: Sussudio, Invisible Touch, Easy Lover and You Can’t Hurry Love and Something Happened On The way To Heaven. The man seated out front had the audience in the palm of his hand throughout which was very impressive.

Nicholas Collins played the drums with just as much energy as his dad and I imagine that playing along talents like Leland Sklar and Daryl Stuermer could not have been easy for this sixteen year old but you would not have noticed any nerves!

To finish I would like to say that I was thrilled when Follow You Follow Me was performed. While the song was under way, the screen featured clips from Genesis videos and images of the band throughout their history and that was all I needed to see. Thank you Phil Collins, thank you Genesis!
