Part Three: Duke Live - A bootleg guide.

Fortunately for those of us who missed the tour, it has been very well documented by live recordings of varying quality from audience recordings to radio broadcasts and soundboard and mixing desk recordings and what follows is a look at some of the recordings available to fans from this tour.

"Paignton '80" - Festival Hall, Paignton, Devon, England 17th March 1980.

Otherwise titled "The First Duke", this is indeed a recording from the first gig of the 1980 tour. There had been some confusion over the initial dates which had to be re-scheduled due to Phil being laid low by a severe bout of laryngitis and several on that original itinerary were in fact, scrapped; but here we have it, the very first gig. As you may expect from an audience recording, the audio quality of this one leaves a lot to be desired for the audiophiles among you, but for those of us who actually prefer un-sanitised recordings where the audience is still an integral part of the proceedings, then this is an enjoyable document including the audience banter! Most fans have hailed the 1980 tour as having the last "classic" Genesis set list although fans of the 1981/82 tours may have something to say about that. Either way, the selection of material on this tour was an impeccable mix of old, new and middling material and this recording opens the tour with a decent sounding effort.

Set List: Back In NYC/Dancing With The Moonlit Knight/Carpet Crawlers/Squonk/One For The Vine/Behind The Lines-Guide Vocal-Turn It On Again-Duke's Travels-Duke's End/Say It's Alright, Joe/The Lady Lies/Ripples/In The Cage-Medley/Afterglow/Follow You Follow Me/Dance On A Volcano/Drum Duet/Los Endos/I Know What I Like.

"Duke Travels To Exeter" - University Hall, Exeter University, Devon, England 19th March 1980.

Another rare recording from the early part of this tour. In fact, this is the third gig of the tour and the first of a two night stint in Exeter, the band's first ever visit to this particular city. It is obvious that the band are still finding their way in terms of remembering the songs and Phil's memory lets him down on several occasions with the words! Nonetheless, another vital document from this part of the tour and an above average audience recording too well worthy of a listen!

Back in NYC/Dancing With The Moonlit Knight/Carpet Crawl/Squonk/One For The Vine/Behind The Lines/Duchess/Guide Vocal/Turn it On Again/Duke's Travels/Duke's End/Say It's Alright, Joe/The Lady Lies/In The Cage Medley/Afterglow/Follow You Follow Me/Dance On A Volcano/Los Endos/I Know What I Like.

"The Keepers Of The Key Come Home" - Friars Club, Aylesbury, Wiltshire, England 22nd March 1980.

A trip down Memory Lane for the band themselves, this gig. Friars had been a regular haunt for the band in their very early days and the last time they had graced this venue was back in 1972! As such it was without doubt an emotional night for all concerned as you can tell from the audience reaction on this recording! Bananas doesn't begin to describe it, really. The band had begun to pick up momentum here and Phil is evidently having fun hamming up for the crowd. As befits such a historic evening, the set also contained a rarity in the addition as a second encore of The Knife which must have sent everyone away happy!

Set List: Back in NYC/Dancing With The Moonlit Knight/Carpet Crawlers/The Lady Lies/One For The Vine/Behind The Lines-Duchess-Guide Vocal-Turn It On Again-Duke's Travels-Duke's End/Say It's Alright, Joe/In The Cage-Medley/Afterglow/Follow You Follow Me/Dance On A Volcano/Drum Duet/Los Endos/I Know What I Like/The Knife.

"Peterborough '80" - ABC Theatre, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England 3rd April 1980.

By now the band were in full swing and evidently enjoying themselves, it is only a shame that this is not reflected in this recording which is of quite poor quality really. By this time on the tour the band had honed the set down to a standard one which omitted Back In NYC .

Set List: Deep In The Motherlode/Dancing With The Moonlit Knight/Carpet Crawlers/ Squonk/One For The Vine/Behind The Lines/Duchess/Guide Vocal/Turn It On Again/Duke's Travels/Duke's End/The Lady Lies/Ripples/In The Cage-Medley/ Afterglow/Follow You Follow Me/Dance On A Volcano/Drum Duet/Los Endos/I Know What I Like.

"Duke Stops To See The Lights" - Tower Theatre, Blackpool, Lancashire, England 6th April 1980.

Another rarely seen or heard recording from the middle part of the UK tour. Blackpool was another town which had not been graced by Genesis' presence before. By now, the set had coalesced into a standardised show which is reflected here in an average audience recording which still gives an idea of the atmosphere generated by the audience at these sell-out shows.

Set List: As above. Source: Audience 2 Cassettes (Transferred to CD). Quality: Average.

"Brighton '80" - Conference Centre, Brighton, Sussex, England 12th April 1980.

Yet another original title, eh? Seriously though, this is an excellent audience recording of what sounds like another superb night on the tour. Both band and audience are in high spirits and this is a worthy addition to any collection. Nothing special in the set list but an extremely enjoyable recording.

Set List: Deep In The Motherlode/Dancing With The Moonlit Knight/Carpet Crawlers/ Squonk/One For The Vine/Behind The Lines-Duchess-Guide Vocal-Turn It On Again-Duke's Travels-Duke's End/Say It's Alright, Joe/The Lady Lies/Ripples/In The Cage-Medley/Afterglow/Follow You Follow Me/Dance On A Volcano/Drum Duet/Los Endos/ I Know What I Like.

"Steeltown Revelations" - City Hall, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England 17th April 1980.

A bona fide classic recording of this show, whichever version you have! Originally taken from a broadcast of the show by local radio station Hallam FM and subsequently re-issued from the Pre-FM broadcast tapes from the station itself. Either way, this recording is a MUST. Perfect quality and unedited too!

Set List: Deep In The Motherlode/Dancing With The Moonlit Knight/Carpet Crawlers/ Squonk/One For The Vine/Behind The Lines-Duchess-Guide Vocal-Turn It On Again-Duke's Travels-Duke's End/Say It's Alright Joe/The Lady Lies/Ripples/In The Cage-Medley/Afterglow/Follow You Follow Me/Dance On A Volcano-Drum Duet-Los Endos/ I Know What I Like.

"Live In Guildford" - Guildford Civic Centre, Surrey, England 20th April 1980.

An unremarkable recording in terms of performance and recording quality; but quite a rare one apparently. Yet another audience recording of this gig. Inessential unless you were at the gig itself, of course!

Set List: As above. Source: Audience 2 Cassettes (Transferred to CD). Quality: Fair.

"Edinburgh '80" - Odeon Theatre, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland 23rd April 1980.

One of only a couple of generally available recording from any of the band's Scottish dates on this tour and quite a decent sounding audience recording to boot! Scotland was always a mainstay of support for the band and the audience on this recording are on fine form! Also interesting for a rare performance of The Knife.

Set List: As above plus The Knife as second encore. Source: Audience 2 Cassettes (Transferred to CD). Quality: Fair.

"Duke Goes To Scotland" - Apollo Theatre, Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Scotland 28th April 1980.

Augmenting the above recording is this above average audience recording from another of the band's Scottish strongholds. Glasgow had been a firm favourite with the band since the early 1970's and it is easy to see why from the reaction of the crowd on this recording which finds both the audience and the band in fine spirits.

Set List: As above. Source: Audience 2 Cassettes (Transferred to CD). Quality: Fair.

"Duke Meets The Geordies" - City Hall, Newcastle, Northumberland, England 30th April 1980.

The band must have experienced a twinge of nostalgia themselves playing the scene of so many of their earlier triumphs again. Sadly, the only document of this show is an average quality audience recording although once again graced with a performance of The Knife.

Set List: As above. Source: Audience 2 Cassettes (Transferred to CD). Quality: Fair.

"Two Nights In Liverpool" - Empire Theatre, Liverpool, Merseyside, England 2nd and 3rd May 1980.

Click to enlarge Click to enlarge

Well, at least I can share in the memories of anyone lucky enough to see either of these gigs! Sadly, neither of the recordings that are available from these gigs really capture the essence of what it must have been like to be there. Mediocre audience recordings are available of both these gigs but, especially in the case of the second night; they are both marred by severe distortion- of passing interest to your average collector but essential to anyone who was at the gigs (or mad fools like me who collect anything!).

Set List: As above (both nights). Source: Audience recording(s) 2 Cassettes (each) (Transferred to CD). Quality: Poor.

Parts of these gigs also featured in the Granada TV documentary: "Live In Liverpool" which was broadcast at the time.

"Drury Lane" - Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London, England 5th May 1980.

A genuine gem this recording, and something of a Holy Grail. It had been rumoured that a recording of this gig existed (although the Capitol Radio broadcast of it has yet to appear) but copies always turned out to be from the subsequent shows at the Lyceum. Fortunately, the genuine article has finally surfaced and it is one of my favourite recordings from this tour. A wonderful audience recording that manages to capture the real essence of the gig itself with some superb performances by the band AND the audience - well worth a listen!

Set List: As above. Source: Audience 2 Cassettes (Transferred to CD). Quality: Very Good.

"Musica" - Lyceum Ballroom, London, England 7th May 1980.

Probably one of the most famous Genesis bootlegs around. Released under various guises and titles. Taken from the BBC Radio broadcast of the gig this is an extremely well-known recording. Excellent quality, as you would expect from a radio broadcast but irritating because the between-song stories have been edited out. Nonetheless, an essential addition to any collection.

Set List: As above. Source: FM Radio broadcast. Quality: Excellent.

Part of the film of this gig was subsequently broadcast as a "Whistle Test" special by BBC TV and the almost complete TV film recording of the previous night at the same venue has also recently surfaced on DVD.

"Portsmouth 1980" - Guildhall, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England 9th May 1980.

Originally planned as one of the first gigs of the tour; this show was re-scheduled due to Phil's attack of laryngitis; a fact he acknowledges himself during the show. A superior quality audience recording this one, worthy of investigation and historic as the last gig of the 1980 UK tour. Set wise, the show was by now the standard show which had proven so successful elsewhere in the UK.

"Live At The Greek" - Greek Theater, Los Angeles, California, USA 27th May 1980.

With no European shows planned for 1980, the band were soon ensconced in another massive tour of the USA and Canada a mixed bag of larger scale and theatre shows including this performance at Los Angeles' famous Greek Theater. A decent audience recording captures this gig in fine style.

Set List: Deep In The Motherlode/Dancing With The Moonlit Knight/Squonk/One For The Vine/Behind The Lines-Duchess-Guide Vocal-Duke's Travels-Duke's End/The Lady Lies/Ripples/Misunderstanding/In the Cage-Medley/Afterglow/Dance On A Volcano/ Drum Duet/Los Endos/I Know What I Like.

"Where's Daryl?" - Pine Knob Music Theater, Clarkston, Michigan, USA 9th June 1980.

An unusual recording this one. The band performed the show without guitarist Daryl Stuermer who was having dental surgery performed that day! His absence did not affect the performance however, and the show is an excellent one captured in this decent sounding audience recording.

Set List: As above. Source: Audience 2 Cassettes (Transferred to CD). Quality: Good.

"Montreal 1980" - Montreal Forum, Quebec Province, Canada 19th June 1980.

One of the famous (or should that be "infamous"?) "hidden" recordings which have started to surface in increasing numbers recently. Taken from tapes direct from the band's own mixing desk, this is another excellent recording although, as you would expect from the desk, it is a bit audience "light" but you can hear them if you listen carefully! Phil's attempts at French song introductions are hilarious and the performance itself is another very enjoyable one.

Set List: As above. Source: Mixing Desk (Transferred to CD). Quality: Excellent.

"The Lamb Lies Down On Albert" - Capitol Theater, Passaic, New Jersey, USA 28th June 1980.

Another enjoyable audience recording from one of the band's final shows on this tour. Nothing outstanding performance wise. The set had gelled into a standardised one by this point and the band were playing to their strengths and having a great time.

Set List: As Above. Source: Audience 2 Cassettes (Transferred to CD). Quality: Good.

"Your Mothers And Fathers Wouldn't Like Us" - Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York, USA 29th June 1980.

The second to last gig of the tour found the band in one of their US strongholds and in fine form at the massive shed that is the Madison Square Garden. An ecstatic crowd give the band a great welcome and are repaid with an excellent performance from the band who are now firing on all cylinders. Another decent audience recording of a classic show.

Set List: As above. Source: Audience 2 Cassettes (Transferred to CD). Quality: Good.

Oh, and for those of you who will no doubt say… "You forgot to mention…!" Here is a list of the other recordings that I am aware of from this particular tour…

UK Tour: Hammersmith Odeon 27-29.3.80; Sophia Gardens Cardiff 9.4.80; Gaumont Theatre Southampton 11.4.80; Caird Hall Dundee 25.4.80.

US/Canadian Tour: Long Beach Arena 24.5.80; Roxy Theater West Hollywood 25.5.80; San Diego Sports Arena 26.5.80; Rosemont Horizon Chicago 6.6.80; Civic Arena Milwaukee 9.6.80; Richfield Coliseum Cleveland 11.6.80; Spectrum Philadelphia 17.6.80; Veterans War Memorial Auditorium Rochester 25.6.80; War Memorial Auditorium Buffalo 26.6.80.

There you have it, an affectionate look back at the Duke album and tour. I hope you enjoyed it enough to dig the album out and give it a spin again, I certainly did!
