“All In A Pacific Road Night” - G2 in concert at the Pacific Road Arts Centre Birkenhead on Saturday 16th January 2010. Review and photographs by Alan Hewitt.

I hadn’t had the pleasure of seeing the band since their A Trick Of The Tail/Wind & Wuthering extravaganza and so was eager to catch up for another excellent night’s entertainment. Thanks to the band’s manager, Colin Davies, I also had the chance to conduct a brief interview with the band which you can read elsewhere in this edition. Arriving in time for the latter part of the sound check, the band certainly sounded in fine form and it looked like all set for another great night.

Once again, G2 managed to combine all the elements that made a show by Genesis themselves such a special event. Tonight we were treated to most of the expected classics opening with a stunning rendition of Eleventh Earl Of Mar which was a joy to behold. Sadly once again, the old grey cells aren’t what they were so pardon me if I don’t mention every track in the set. The band have always prided themselves on presenting as accurate a re-creation of the Genesis “sound” and tonight was definitely no exception. Tracks such as In The Cage, Ripples, and Cinema Show were all delivered faultlessly and if you closed your eyes then it really was possible to imagine that you were at the real (or Rael) thing! Poor old Terry was struggling with a head cold but you would not have noticed had he not apologised for it himself during the show. All in all, this was yet another superb performance from a band whose dedication to their craft always shines through and let’s hope that it isn’t too long before we have the pleasure of seeing them up here again!
